1. The price went up — does the math still work?

As of January 2026, Zero to Mastery costs $49/month or $299/year, up from $279. (If you joined earlier and never cancelled, you're grandfathered at the old rate — that's worth protecting.) The monthly option exists, but I'd ignore it: at $49/mo you'd pay $299 in about six months, so unless you're certain you'll be done fast, the annual is the only number that matters.

Here's the honest comparison. If you want to learn one thing — say, React — you can buy a single, excellent course for $15 on sale elsewhere and never think about a subscription again. ZTM's $299 only makes sense if you're going to consume a lot of it: a full career path, the community, the monthly workshops, the whole machine.

So the price isn't really $299 — it's $299 divided by how much of a complete path you actually finish. Finish a full developer track and it's one of the best deals in online learning. 2. What you're actually paying for: the path, not the videos

The mistake people make with ZTM is evaluating it like a course library — "are the videos good?" They are. But that's not the product. The product is the structured path: a sequenced, start-here-end-here roadmap from zero to job-ready in web dev, machine learning, data, or DevOps, plus a community that's unusually active and instructors who update content when the tooling changes.

That structure is the whole value, and it's also the whole risk. If you already know what you want and how to sequence it, you don't need ZTM — you need one good course and the discipline to finish it. ZTM earns its keep when you don't know the path — when "I want to become a developer" is as specific as you can get, and you need someone to hand you the next step every time you finish one.

You're not paying for lectures. You're paying for a map and a reason to keep walking. If you have those already, save the money. If you don't, that's exactly the gap ZTM fills better than a pile of one-off courses ever will.

3. The test: pick one path and finish week one

There's no permanent free trial, though ZTM runs free-access weeks a few times a year — if one's open, use it. But you don't need a trial to run the real test, because the test isn't "is the content good." It's "will I actually do this."

So before you pay: pick one path — not three, one — and write down the first week of it. Block the hours on your calendar like they're meetings. Then, whether you're inside a free week or you've just subscribed, finish the first section in seven days. Not skim it. Finish it, exercises and all.

If you get through week one on schedule, you've proven the only thing that matters: that you'll show up. At that point $299 is cheap for twelve months of a structured path that keeps handing you the next step. If week one slips and you don't finish it — that's your answer too, and a $0 one. A subscription can buy you a curriculum; it can't buy you the hour on Tuesday night. Find out whether you'll spend that hour before you spend the $299, not after.

ZTM isn't overpriced — it's priced for people who finish paths, and bought by people who collect tabs. Decide which one you are by finishing week one of a single path, not by guessing.
