1. The subscription vs the $15 course

Udemy's Personal Plan runs about $32/month in the US (a bit less if you pay annually). That sounds reasonable until you remember how Udemy actually sells everything else: individual courses sit at $13–15 during the sales that run almost constantly. If you ever pay $90 for a Udemy course, you waited at the wrong moment — there's always another sale in a day or two.

So here's the comparison that matters. One month of Personal Plan ($32) is roughly two individual courses you'd own forever. A full year of the plan (~$300–380 depending on billing) is twenty-plus courses bought outright. The subscription only wins if you genuinely consume a lot — four or more included courses a year, every year.

Most people don't. Most people want one or two specific skills, take those courses, and drift. For that pattern — which is the honest pattern for the majority — buying the two courses you actually want on sale is cheaper, and they're yours to keep. 2. The catch nobody mentions: not every course is included

Here's the part that quietly breaks the math for a lot of people: the Personal Plan isn't the whole Udemy catalog. It's a curated subset — a large one, but a subset. The specific course you came for, the one with 200,000 students and the instructor you've heard of, may well be buy-only and not included in the subscription at all.

That changes everything about the decision. If you subscribe assuming you'll get "everything" and then discover your top three courses are buy-only, you're now paying $32/month and buying courses — the worst of both. There's also the ownership difference: a course you buy is yours forever, while subscription access lasts exactly as long as you keep paying. Cancel, and the curated library goes with it.

Before you ever subscribe, check that the courses you actually want are inside the plan — not just that the plan exists. This one check is where most "the subscription wasn't worth it" stories are born.

3. Use the 7-day trial as a real test

Unlike a lot of these subscriptions, the Personal Plan actually gives you a 7-day free trial — so you can settle this for $0, as long as you treat the trial like an experiment and not a free week of browsing. It auto-charges when the seven days end, so put a cancel reminder on day 6 the moment you start.

The test has two parts. First, in the first ten minutes, search for the three courses you'd actually take and confirm they're included in the plan, not buy-only. If they're not included, cancel now — the plan can't do what you wanted. Second, if they are included, binge one course this week and see whether you finish.

If you finish one in seven days and there are at least three more included courses you genuinely want, subscribe — you're in the heavy-user lane where the plan pays off. If you finished one but the rest of your list is buy-only or thin, cancel before day 7 and just buy that one course on sale. The trial isn't there to sample courses — it's there to prove whether you're a four-courses-a-year person before Udemy starts charging you like one.
